Beware of Suspicious Email Attachments: They Could Be a Scam

Imagine checking your inbox and spot a critical email with an attached Word document. It might be an invoice or a message from a supplier or colleague. Without thinking, you open it—and just like that, you’ve been scammed.

Cybercriminals rely on these moments. One of their latest tricks involves sending corrupted Microsoft Word files that bypass email security filters. This method is both clever and dangerous.

Phishing scams, where hackers trick you into giving up sensitive details like passwords or financial info, are increasingly common. These emails often appear legitimate, coming from trusted sources like banks, coworkers, or companies.

These attacks are so dangerous because they disguise malware in corrupted files. Once opened, Word may “repair” the document, displaying what seems to be a regular attachment. However, a malicious QR code or link is hidden inside, often leading to fake login pages designed to steal your credentials.

Hackers who access even one employee’s login can infiltrate your systems, steal sensitive information, or send more phishing emails to your contacts. The consequences can be severe—financial losses, legal troubles, and damage to your company’s reputation.

The best defense is awareness. Always think before clicking on attachments or links, especially in urgent emails. Verify the sender when in doubt, and never trust a file just because it looks professional.

Educating your team about phishing is key to keeping your business safe. If you need help, we’re here to support you.
